Sustainablility

Heres something i noticed today:

At the Johannesburg Summit 2002, of a whole bunch of governments, they agreed on four principals of sustainability (This meaning that people and the planet can live together, off each other, and neither one loses out).

  1. Futurity: Making sure future generations have the same quality of life as we currently have
  2. Environment: Preserving ecosystems, both locally and internationally, to prevent disruption to natural processes essential for safe guarding human lives. (ie. Management of water, land, and wildlife)
  3. Public Participation: The public should be aware o, and participate in the processes of change towards sustainable development. Each person who interacts with an area and uses its resources should/can be held accountable for what happens to it, and also participates in the decision making process as to what management needs to be done. Conservation where the people who need the area most are involved in the decisions.
  4. Equity and Social Justice: Fair shares for all. If there is a finite amount that we may consume, or use, then we must share what we already have. Therefore, equity of access to the worlds global resources must be the guiding principal, thus improving the lives of the poor.

Systems like this, although these are supposed to be applied on a national scale, and this is what governments are supposed to use when developing, it can be used in a local scale as well. It just requires a little thinking on how to apply it to your life, without having any detrimental effects on someone else.
