An agricultural crime against humanity

Poor countries are being persuaded not to grow food, but to grow crops for biofuels instead, in what George Monbiot describes as ‘an agricultural crime against humanity‘.

This is a tricky one for the green lobby, but hugely important. Climate change will affect the less developed south more than the more temperate north as it is, without us co-opting yet more land to satisfy our wealthy lifestyles. There is no substitute for consuming less, driving less, and lowering our dependency on technology.

Unsustainable biofuels grown at the expense of the poor is simply greed hiding behind ecological concern.
