There are lots of social bookmarking sites, Digg being the best known of dozens of sites working to a similar format. Generally speaking I’ve found them to have a pretty narrow focus, lots of spam, and far too many competitive users. Which make Care2 refreshingly different. Set up in 1998 as a way of networking activists, it has slowly gathered some 8 million users over the last decade. It combines an environmental and social justice news bookmarking service with petitions, discussions and resident bloggers. If you like the idea of user-generated news services, but have been frustrated by the preponderance of technology stories and in-jokes on the usual sites, take a look at Care2. Admittedly it gets skewed towards animal welfare sometimes, but there’s plenty on justice and human rights too, and on the whole it tends to be both interesting and friendly.
It had a re-design a couple of weeks ago, so I thought I’d give them a plug.
