The banks are being bailed out and today the FTSE is on the up. Behind the headlines and the pictures of city workers clearing their desks is the reality of high interest rates, rising food and energy prices, the shadow of negative equity, and the fact that real people in real life carry the can for the city’s excesses.
I’m reminded of a certain prophet’s vision of a time when the wealthy will be called to account:
Look, a righteous king is coming! And honest princes will rule under him… In that day ungodly fools will not be heroes. Wealthy cheaters will not be respected as outstanding citizens… They deprive the hungry of food and give no water to the thirsty. Their smooth tricks will be exposed, including all the lies they use to oppress the poor in the courts. But generous people plan to do what is generous, and they stand firm in their generosity. – Isaiah 32
