What we learned this week

  • The recession hits Britain’s pets: the RSPCA reports a 50% increase in abandoned pets this year.
  • English beach resorts and barbecue manufacturers rejoice at the prospect of a warm summer, but it’s good news for the UK’s wildlife too. Two wet summers in a row have devastated bee, butterfly and bird populations.
  • Hooray for bloggers. Apparently the mainstream media didn’t connect the dots on swine flu and industrial farming until the blogs were talking about it. Grist was there first, I hear.
