Ever wondered what happens to all the food that supermarkets can’t sell? Until recently, it went in the bin. 100,000 tonnes of it still does, but a little less than before – thanks to Tony Lowe and his charity Fareshare.
Fareshare takes unsold food from supermarkets and manufacturers, and redistributes it to charities, schools and meals programmes. Since they would otherwise have to pay for disposal, some companies actually pay Fareshare to take it away. It’s one of those ingenious entrepreneurial ideas, and is the latest entry on Fran Monks inspiring howtomakeadifference.net.
