leading the way on 10:10

1010Good news from the folks at 10:10, who reported last night that the entire cabinet are leading by example and have signed up to their challenge. “We cannot believe it” Franny Armstrong said yesterday. A confirmation text message came through from Ed Millband while they were still writing the celebratory email announcing that the tory front bench and Nick Clegg had already signed up. Now we just need to hold them to it.

If all our politicians are making a promise to reduce their own carbon emissions by 10% next year, it sends a strong signal. It also gives the 10:10 idea a huge boost, and at this point the campaign really could go a very long way in a short amount of time.

In order to keep up the momentum, the campaign urgently needs funds. A campaign of this scale would normally be years in the making and have 100 staff, but as Franny says, “unfortunately we’ve got three months, no staff, minus £36,000 and a few desks in a shared office we’re about to be kicked out from.” If you’d like to contribute to this bold and creative project, visit the site and make a donation. They’re also looking for web and design volunteers.

  • 10,000 individuals and 400 companies have signed up so far, with groups as diverse as  Spurs Football Club, Edinburgh University, ActionAid and the Science Museum all taking part.
  • Don’t want to pick on the man, but did you see the Independent’s investigation into David Cameron’s free flights in millionaires’ jets. Looks like he’ll have to cut back on those next year.
