Jesus and his environment – pt 6

The earth belongs to Jesus
After all these stories and statements about Jesus and his view of the world, Matthew chooses to end his gospel with a verse that explains Jesus relationship with the earth. Jesus had authority before his death, over sickness, over the elements. He stands before the disciples with a final power to his arsenal, a hard won victory over death itself. Raised from the dead as the ultimate expression of the unfinished nature of the earth, and as a living promise of its eventual perfection, Jesus appears to the disciples and says: “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go…”’ (28:18)
