The earth responds to Jesus.
These would all be empty words, were Jesus not able to back them up with genuine power.
- Jesus got up and rebuked the winds and the waves, and it was completely calm. (Matt 8:26)
- During the fourth watch of the night Jesus went out to them, walking on the lake. (14:25)
- Seeing a fig tree by the road, he went up to it but found nothing on it except leaves. Then he said to it, “May you never bear fruit again!” Immediately the tree withered. (21:9)
- When Jesus touched her hand, the fever left her. (8:15)
The earth recognises a superior power in Jesus, and it relates differently to him. The weather does as it’s told, bread multiplies at his fingertips. Disease works in reverse – rather than infection spreading on contact, the sick person catches a case of wholeness and wellness. We know from John and from Hebrews that Jesus is in fact the creator – ‘through him all things were made’. Little wonder then that all things seem to know this.
