The big environmental news this week has been the acquittal of six Greenpeace protestors who defaced the chimney at Kingsnorth power station last week. It’s quite a remarkable case, because they used climate change as ‘lawful excuse’. This forced the court not just to rule on their act of bold graffiti, but on climate change and the government’s energy policy. Witnesses were some of the world’s leading experts on climate change. A lot of people have started unpacking the verdict and its implications. Here’s John Vidal and Tony Juniper for the Guardian, and Greenpeace’s own victorious statement. The Daily Mail have gone for the headline ‘Green light to anarchy‘, in typically restrained fashion. Charles Clover for the Telegraph misses the point altogether by saying that the trial collapsed, and the Earth Abbey blog compares the protestors to Jeremiah.
