It’s January again, which means if you’re eating more seasonally you are dusting down the recipe books for interesting things to do with swede, parsnips, leeks, potatoes, sprouts, chicory, celery, and cabbages of many kinds. Also see beetroot and pears.
On the meat and fish front, get yourself some venison or guinea fowl, and monkfish, turbot and plaice are also in season.
This year I intend to take my seasonal explorations a step further and start growing more food. There’s not a lot to do in January, other than to dig up as much of the lawn as the landlord will allow. I know very little about growing food, and am armed only with a garden fork and an encyclopedic guide that was a present from the inlaws.
