What we learned this week

  • California’s budget deficit is $26 billion, and grows by $25 million a day.
  • The last WW1 war veteran died at the weekend, at the age of 111. Harry Patch was a gunner who decided he would never shoot to kill. In an industrial scale war that so cheapened human life, there is something rather redemptive about the last survivor being someone who believed so firmly in its value.
