peak oil politics

the All Party Parliamentary Group on Peak Oil

Someone from transition St Albans drew my attention to this today. I hadn’t realised there was a Parliamentary working group on peak oil. It’s great to see it exists. Not so good to see how it seems to be the same usual suspects raising the issue, and being repeatedly dismissed or ignored by some familiar faces too. In this case, all credit to MP John Hemming for not giving up on it, and shame on MP Malcolm Wicks for insisting there’s nothing to worry about.

Anyway, if you want to keep an eye on what the government is saying and thinking about peak oil, this is the site to watch.

  1. Hi Jeremy

They had to be thinking about the issues. Good to see it’s in the form of an all-party parliamentary group – but as you say, depends on who’s involved. Hope Ed Miliband’s keeping a watcful eye.

I wish they’d tell the public how everything most people do, buy and eat daily is reliant on oil – and promote ways to avoid it. We should try to follow Sweden – 2 or 3 years ago they set the ambitious target of going oil-free within 20 years. Haven’t seen how they’re doing though.

    Cheers, David
