What we learned this week

  • The Independent newspaper has been sold to Russian billionaire Alexander Lebedev for the princely sum of £1. I’d have bought it myself at that price.
  • The key to Britain’s economic recovery lies… in outer space. “Britain’s space industry has defied the recession” said science minister Lord Drayson this week at the launch of the UK Space Agency. “It can grow to £40bn a year and create 100,000 jobs in 20 years.”

  1. Interesting. How will it affected the paper u think? I’m a bit troubled, or mixed, about the whole end of print news.. There’s more quality input and discussions on politics and society in my everyday life now with the web, but still..

    1. We’ll have to wait and see. The Independent hasn’t been ‘independent’ in the true sense for quite some time, but it has been the best source of good investigative journalism. It was always my favourite paper when I was a journalism student, and I read all the papers every day.

Unfortunately it’s also been losing money and readers and couldn’t continue. Hopefully Lebedev’s group will save it without tampering too much with it.
