On the trail of Chainsaw Barbie

Just a quick mention of a rather creative campaign from Greenpeace this week. They’ve discovered that toymaker Mattel is using wood from Indonesia in its packaging, a customer is the trade that is destroying the country’s rainforests. In response, hundreds of ‘Chainsaw Barbies’ were hidden around the UK, and Ken dumped Barbie in a viral video.

Twee perhaps, but it’s working. A number of toy companies have declared new policies. Lego, who have been using the same Asian paper company, have announced they will be moving to FSC wood. Mattel themselves have launched an investigation. There’s nothing like going  after someone’s cherished brand to get some swift corporate action.

As always with Greenpeace, there’s a wealth of research and detail behind the project. For more, you can explore toy company links here, and maps of the affected areas of Indonesia here. For the background on deforestation in Indonesia, see here.
