Until he was forced out of office in February this year, Mohammed Nasheed of the Maldives was the world’s most climate-savvy world leader. And he had to be. The Maldives are low-lying islands, and if estimates of sea level rise are correct, the country will simply no longer exist by the end of the century. Stopping climate change is a matter of national survival.
The Island President is a new documentary following Nasheed’s first year in office, leading up to the Copenhagen climate change summit. It tells the story of his political activism, imprisonment and exile, eventual electoral victory, and his fight to be heard in climate change negotiations. However history judges his presidency and its premature end, this looks like a film with unusual access to a quite extraordinary man.
