A few weeks ago I mentioned the issue of forced labour in garment factories in India, and the fact that British high street brands are selling clothes made under slavery conditions. That’s one example of the many places where forced labour still exists.
According to Anti-Slavery International, forced labour or child labour can be found in 58 different countries and 122 different product supply chains. Clothing sweatshops are perhaps the best known, but other problem sectors include embroidery and carpet-making, cotton-picking, brick-making and gold mining.
Products of Slavery is an interactive website that presents the data about forced labour, with a map of countries and the industries involved. It’s a useful place to find out more, and to start asking more questions of our favourite brands.
