1 in 4 people worldwide paid a bribe last year

27% of the world paid a bribe last year, according to Transparency International‘s Global Corruption Barometer, which is out today. It’s a huge survey, covering 114,ooo people in 107 countries, and it paints a remarkable picture of extent and experience of corruption.

There is a wealth of information in the full report, but one of the striking things about corruption is that the institutions that are supposed to protect people from it are often the most corrupt. Only political parties scored higher than the police.


You can view all the national results on the Transparency International site too, and things look a little different in the UK. Care to guess which institutions are seen as the most corrupt?

The loser was the media, which 69% of respondents saying it was affected by corruption. Political parties were just behind at 66%, then parliament at 55% and business at 49%.
