Building of the week: Brooklyn Grange rooftop farm

Do you know a building with a flat roof that could be put to good use, perhaps on top of the office you work in or one you look out over? Here’s a little inspiration to get you thinking about what’s possible.

That’s Brooklyn Grange farm in New York, which covers 2 roofs and 2.5 acres. It includes chickens and bees, and runs as a commercial venture supplying local markets. There’s a video with more detail on National Geographic.

  1. There is a beautiful roof top garden on The Australian International School at Kowloon at Hong Kong. It is designed for teaching purposes, not only about the growing of plants, but with examples of wind and solar energy in use. I visited it in 2013 and took lots of photographs.
