Visualising a city’s recycling

Real World Visuals have been doing some work with the Bristol Waste Company, which is responsible for the city’s recycling and rubbish disposal. They’ve created a couple of videos that show the scale of the task, how much recycling is collected and how much more there could be.

One thing I like about this is that it’s a public awareness video that talks about the value of recycling, rather than trying to motivate people to ‘do the green thing’. “The recycled material has a value to the city” it says, “it’s sold, reprocessed and reused, but what is thrown away only has a cost.” That’s a very mainstream articulation of the circular economy, and potentially a useful way of framing the issue of recycling alongside civic responsibility and environmental concern.
