What we learned this week

Those troubled by range anxiety might take comfort in Renault’s experimental electric vehicle that just went 1,000km on a single charge, at motorway speeds. Not a car you can buy right now, but evidence of what’s possible and the direction of travel on EV range.

It is a horrific story, but the three-part series Boy Wasted is an important piece of environmental investigative reporting in a true crime podcast form. It highlights how refugees in Turkey are employed sorting recycling from Britain in dangerous and illegal waste processing yards.

Have a look at Germany’s biggest agrivoltaic project. It provides power for 6,000 homes from sun-tracking solar panels set in 28 hectares of wheat fields – which remain wheat fields.

Solar in an entirely different context: the film crew for the TV series Fallout were able to use solar trucks as an off-grid power station while filming in remote locations. (Apologies for the Amazon propaganda that comes with this otherwise interesting story.)

I enjoyed this short news item about Rodgers Oloo Magotha, who rescues birds in Nairobi, Kenya. Bonus points for having a bird perched somewhere on his person in practically every shot.

Some favourite books of 2025

I never got round to writing a list of my favourite books at the end of last year, and it feels to late now. So here are links to the reviews of the environmental books I most appreciated last year. They’re all in a list here, along with some favourite novels from last year as well.

Some favourite posts from 2025

It’s time to wrap things up for the season, and I will do so with a selection of highlights. Having looked back over this year’s articles, here are some that I’m pleased with. The landscaper of the climate age – The Chinese architect and landscaper Kongjian Yu died in a plane crash this year, and…

On still blogging in 2026

I realised recently that I’ve been writing a blog for over 20 years now. Those two decades have not softened my reflexive dislike of the word blog, by the way. I mentally hesitate before ever using it. I will suck it up and use it here, because at the beginning of a new year, I…

What is a carbon handprint?

Carbon footprints are a familiar term for the climate emissions of something, whether that’s a person’s lifestyle or a business, or a product or event. It’s a term that is well understood in green circles and is recognised among the general public. Its popularity is due in part, let us not forget, to the PR…

  1. I was able to personally feel touched while reading the blog since it is about a subject of interest. Not only I delight in animals breeding but also I like anything nature related. As the Holy Pope Francis said, we must be stewards of the environment and therefore, ensure to keep it in the good condition than we found it for generations to come. In brief, it was about solar system being used in a region where wheat is grown and the activity itself does not affect the production of wheat 🌾 in that particular farm because everything is being considered before implementation. One more thing that was addressed is EV that during racing of about 1,000 Km it was charged only once, showing how highly effective these electric vehicles 🚗 are practical, efficient but most importantly help to reduce carbon dioxide emissions, thus reducing pollution in the atmosphere and we benefit and are very happy to know our planet and health are taken care of, as for instance breathing clean air and as well as reducing non-biodegradable materials that an alternative energy source for light, in this instance, the solar system, provides.

I thank you for reading what I have to share.

    Take care.
