In 1950, the average Briton travelled 5 miles in a day, between home and work, the shops, school and so on. Today that average distance has gone up to 30 miles a day, as our workplaces are further away. Everything we do requires more travelling than it used to – we drive our kids to school more, take longer commutes, drive to out of town supermarkets, and relax at out of town leisure centres. We are a hypermobile society.
