What we learned this week

  • The Co-operative Group’s profits have risen 38% this year as people turn their backs on the big banks.
  • Speaking of which, rumour has it Labour are putting a Post Office based ‘People’s bank’ in their manifesto. Which is great news, although one has to wonder why they changed their minds right after gutting the Post Office and bailing out the bigger banks.
  • In Margaret Atwood’s surreal new novel The Year of the Flood, which I’m enjoying immensely, there is a cult called God’s Gardeners that venerates Saint E F Schumacher and Saint E O Wilson. Can I get an amen?

  1. It took me 3 applications to get Co-op to give me an account, but they finally did! I’m guessing they must be doing pretty well to turn down business from a safe bet customer like myself!

    1. Yeah, they’re choosy that way. They turned us down for a mortgage, even though we bank with them and they knew perfectly well what we earned!
