What we learned this week

  • This year the UK became a net importer of gas for the first time in 40 years.
  • In an idea that has the future written all over it, this supermarket in London has started growing vegetables on the roof.
  • Those whinging about our coalition government should consider Reykjavik’s mayoral elections, won by an comedian and anarchist from the ‘Best Party’. “No one has to be afraid of the Best Party,” he said in his acceptance speech, “because it is the best party. If it wasn’t, it would be called the Worst Party or the Bad Party. We would never work with a party like that.”

  1. I was just passing by Trader Joe’s near Union Square the other day and I thought, “Wouldn’t it be cool if grocery stores grew produce on their rooftops.” There’s just so much wasted space in our cities and so much potential for useful green roofs! Very exciting to know someone is doing it!
